PREVENT Statement

As a result of the increase in examples of extremism and radicalisation in Britain the Government have put a new duty on schools to ensure pupils are taught about our culture including what are British values as well as teaching at an appropriate level in relation to the child's abilities and understanding about extremism and radicalisation. As a school we are developing our approach to this new duty. In order to further support schools and families the Government have created a new website called "Educate against hate" which we have put as a link for you to look at if you wish to know more.

At Crosby High School we are alert to the increasing threat of radicalisation and extremeism.  The PREVENT Strategy is a multi agency response to notify the LSCB or Special Branch if we have concerns on this issue.

The School has a clear policy and escalation process if we need to act. This is outlined in the schools safeguarding policy

PREVENT STRATEGY

Since July 2015 schools and other public sectors providers have been required to support the government in the fight against terror and extremism. As you will be aware Britain and other countries around the world have been identified as potential terrorist targets. Extremist organisations pose a real and credible threat to our safety. To reduce the likelihood of an attack the government have created a security framework, the government have called this CONTEST based around the principles of PREVENT, PROTECT, PREPARE AND PURSUE. Crosby High has considered its approach and addressed this in a variety of ways. The school plays a role in the PREVENT strategy which relates to the prevention of radicalisation and extremism.

This year we have addressed this government agenda in a number of ways:-

1. Staff have undertaken PREVENT awareness training both online and through INSET training provided by Merseyside Police.

2. Senior Staff have attended WRAP (Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent) briefing training which highlighted the government strategy; this has been shared with the relevant members of the school governing body.

3. The Safeguarding policy has been adapted to include Prevent and how we as a school need to respond if we have a concern. This now directly links with guidance provided by Sefton LA and Merseyside police. If a referral is made the local authority assess the information at a CHANNEL PANEL. This body will decide the next level of intervention

4. Visitors and guests undergo an assessment to ensure the purpose of their visit is positive and to enhance the educational experience of our pupils and staff in our care.

5. The curriculum has been designed to support learning and diversity. This is addressed via the school PSHE programme, which covers British values and other relevant global issues. Diversity is also embraced via our equality and diversity policy.

If you wish for further information you may want to consult the Sefton LA website http://www.seftonlscb.co.uk/ this will provide further information for you and your family.

Can I also stress that if you have any concerns please do not hesitate in contacting me at school to discuss any issues.

Yours sincerely

Gavin Dixon
